Tuesday, February 24, 2009 ELI KNOWLES, 55, is having a conversation with his new therapist, JACOB GOLDEN, 59.
ELI
I wanted to discuss the Watchers … and the Book of Enoch. Have you heard of them?
GOLDEN
I may have heard the term Watchers before, but probably not in the context in which you’re using it. But I have heard of the Book of Enoch.
ELI
Well, there are references throughout the Book of Enoch to Watchers.
GOLDEN
I see. Well, what do you think the term Watchers means in that context?
ELI
I have no idea. But I think I may have some. I think we may all have them.
GOLDEN
Watchers?
ELI
Yes.
GOLDEN
Are they … creatures?
ELI
I think they could be. But in my case I think they’re very important and powerful people.
GOLDEN
And they watch you?
ELI
Yes. And they try to influence my thinking, sometimes … which strikes me as odd.
GOLDEN
In what way?
ELI
They believe my hypothesis is wrong, I think. And they want me to stop writing about it. But they nevertheless want the truth.
GOLDEN
In a nutshell, refresh my memory on what you mean by your hypothesis.
ELI
Okay. Well, I believe that the planet is headed for a showdown.
GOLDEN
A showdown? Like a gunfight at the OK Corral?
ELI
So to speak. And the players in this showdown … will be extraterrestrials … versus the humans … and I believe this showdown is part of a strategy to make the world desire intervention by other aliens.
GOLDEN
Aliens and extraterrestrials being roughly the same thing?
ELI
Yes.
GOLDEN
Well, you’re probably not alone. The movies, at least, would have some of us believe such a thing could happen.
ELI
I believe it is timed to happen with the coming of the Jewish Messiah.
GOLDEN
The Jewish Messiah being whom? Who?
ELI
I realize that you’re Jewish.
GOLDEN
Yes, I am.
ELI
And that was largely why I chose you as my counselor. Because I wanted to have the input from someone with Jewish sensibilities.
GOLDEN
Well, I don’t know what being Jewish would have to do with my ability to counsel you for any problems you think you might be having … but you’re entitled to hire me for whatever reason you wish.
ELI
I think I’m getting off the point of the Watchers.
GOLDEN
I think you’re right.
ELI
But to answer your question about the Jewish Messiah … it would be the One whom the Jews have been waiting for.
GOLDEN
Would that be Jesus?
ELI
It would be Immanuel, meaning God with us. It would be the Messiah sent by the God of Israel.
GOLDEN
What does that have to do with Watchers?
ELI
Well, I think they’re trying to decide which side to pull for. You know … hedging their bets.
GOLDEN
Either the aliens or extraterrestrials … or the human Messiah as sent by the God of Israel, as you indicated?
ELI
Yes. I think the Watchers are all turned around. And I think they’re coming to me for help. But, oddly enough, I think they’re also trying to influence my opinion — which ain’t gonna happen.
GOLDEN
Why not?
ELI
Because I know things that they don’t know, which they would know, or would prove that they know … if they weren’t coming to me for help. But since they are coming to me for help, I believe, I don’t think they know … and I think that they think that I might know.
GOLDEN
About what?
ELI
The showdown.
GOLDEN
And you believe that you know?
ELI
Yes.
GOLDEN
About the showdown?
ELI
Yes.
GOLDEN
How is it that you know something about the showdown, as you call it, that the average person might not know about the showdown?
ELI
Because I’ve been rehearsing it in my head since I was a child.
GOLDEN
Rehearsing it? Are you saying that you’ve had visions about the showdown?
ELI
Yes.
GOLDEN
And what would you say to anyone who wanted to know the most important thing about the showdown?
ELI
That things often are not as they appear. Which is the name of my website.
GOLDEN
Meaning what?
ELI
Everything is upside down. A paradox. Black is white, and white is black. Good appears evil, and evil appears to be good.
GOLDEN
Why do you believe that it is like this … that everything, presumably you mean life, is upside down?
ELI
Because, otherwise there wouldn’t be any meaning in my life. Nothing would make sense. The whole Jewish problem … would not make sense. The idea of an athlete exerting himself so that he does not have to exert himself so much in a game … would not make sense. I believe that difficulty … is paradoxically a blessing. Otherwise, my life would not make sense. Life in general would not make sense. And I have applied that to my hypothesis … and I have come up with what I have based on this true aspect to reality.
GOLDEN
Which is what, in a nutshell? Tell me again.
ELI
That a good leader, to lead well, must be a servant. That those who are the most arrogant … are often those who are the most insecure and incapable. That humility is better than strength of ego, power and might. That less is more. And more is too much.
GOLDEN
And how do you think this line of thinking goes over with the Watchers, as you call them?
ELI
I think they think it sucks. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God … that he might exalt you in due season, you know? And I think for this reason … they can’t deal with my choice of a Messiah.
GOLDEN
So are you concerned for them … or do you see yourself as competing with them?
ELI
Why would I compete with them? I don’t have anything to compete with. They’re technologically superior. But I have one simple thing that they don’t have.
GOLDEN
Which is what?
ELI
Truth. And I’m offering it to them … at no charge.
GOLDEN
Why do you think that you have the truth?
ELI
For two reasons: one, I’ve been rehearsing this all of my life, and, two … they’re showing up to watch me, and there must be a good reason for that.
GOLDEN
What do you think that reason is?
ELI
The only thing that I can imagine … is that a rabbi friend of mine told them about the mystical things which seemed to follow me around.
GOLDEN
Such as what?
ELI
I can’t tell you.
GOLDEN
Why not?
ELI
Because you’ll think I’m making these things up.
